Groveland, Big Oak Flat and the Pine Mountain Lake gates

Groveland and Big Oak Flat sit side by side on Highway 120, the road to Yosemite's Big Oak Flat Entrance. Both began as gold camps in 1849, and Big Oak Flat was named for a large oak that stood there. Groveland was called Garrote until residents renamed it in 1875, and from 1915 to 1925 it was headquarters for the Hetch Hetchy water project, according to the Tuolumne County Historical Society. The Groveland area had 540 people in the 2020 Census.

Most of the homes out here are in Pine Mountain Lake, the gated community next to town, with about 2,822 homes and town homes. In the 2020 Census, 1,674 of its 3,055 homes were held for seasonal or occasional use, more than half. If yours is one of them and you live somewhere else, send photos of each room with the form and we will give you one flat price. See our guide to cabin cleanouts for owners who live away.

Pine Mountain Lake is gated, with a Main Gate staffed 24 hours a day. Before we come, the owner registers us with the Main Gate as a vendor, by phone at (209) 962-8615 or online. Give us your unit and lot number when you book. The association does not allow parking on the streets inside, so tell us where the trailer can pull in.

Curbside trash in the Groveland area is Moore Bros Scavenger, a family business in Big Oak Flat since 1969. Regular service is cans of 30 to 33 gallons, up to 50 pounds each. A couch, a dresser or a whole cleanout is what we haul.

Where Groveland loads go

Groveland has its own county transfer station at 10700 Merrell Road, but it opens only on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 8 AM with the last load at 3:30 PM. It takes furniture, appliances and other bulky items for a fee, and it takes mattresses at no charge, which Cal Sierra in Sonora does not. The rest of the week, the nearest transfer station is Cal Sierra at 19309 Industrial Drive in East Sonora, open every day.

Inside Pine Mountain Lake, the association's compost area at the campground turnout takes branches up to 6 inches across and 4 feet long, plus leaves and pine needles, from owners and the people they hire. Stumps, trash and building materials are not allowed. Latex paint, clean motor oil, batteries and electronics can go to the Groveland Transfer Station; other hazardous waste goes to the county's drop-off in Jamestown, by appointment.
