Copperopolis, the copper town by Lake Tulloch

Copperopolis is a copper town, not a gold town. W. K. Reed and Thomas McCarty found copper here in 1860, and during the Civil War these mines were the main copper producer in the country, according to the state's historical landmark listing. The Copperopolis area had 3,400 people in the 2020 Census.

Today many homes sit around Lake Tulloch, Copper Cove and Copper Valley, and some of them are lake places for people who live elsewhere. In the 2020 Census, about one home in seven in the Copperopolis area was held for seasonal or occasional use. If you live in the valley or the Bay Area, send photos with the form and we can price it from those. See our guide to cleanouts for owners who live away.

Curbside trash here is Cal-Waste, the county's permitted hauler. The Copperopolis Transfer Station on O'Byrnes Ferry Road takes household trash, recycling and cardboard only, and the county says a couch can jam the hopper there. Furniture, appliances, remodel debris and full garages are what we haul.

Lake Tulloch is run by Tri-Dam, which reviews dock, deck and seawall work along the shore. Check with them before the work starts. Once the old boards are pulled and stacked, we haul them away.

Where can you take junk in Copperopolis?

If you live in Calaveras County and want to haul it yourself, the Copperopolis Transfer Station at 3831 O'Byrnes Ferry Road is open Friday through Tuesday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM, and closed Wednesday and Thursday. It takes up to two cubic yards of household trash a day for free, plus recycling and flattened cardboard. Bring ID. Part-time residents show a tax bill with the Solid Waste fee.

Furniture, mixed loads, remodel debris and treated wood go to the county's Rock Creek Solid Waste Facility at 12021 Hunt Road in Milton, open every day with no loads after 4:15 PM. Mixed loads are $8 a cubic yard, appliances are $25 each, and mattresses are free. Hazardous waste goes to the county drop-off at Rock Creek. If you would rather skip the trips, we haul it away for one flat price.

How much does junk removal cost in Copperopolis?

A few items usually run $200 to $400, and a 16-foot trailer piled high is typically $700 to $1,000. Dump fees and the drive from Sonora are included, and you get one flat price before anything is loaded.

Can I take a couch to the Copperopolis transfer station?

No. It takes household trash, recycling and cardboard only. The county sends furniture to Rock Creek in Milton and says a couch can jam the hopper at the transfer stations. Or we carry it out and haul it away.

I own a place on Lake Tulloch but live out of the area. Can you clear it?

Yes. Send photos of each room with the form for a flat price. Someone you trust can let us in, or for outside piles nobody needs to be there. We send photos when the job is done.

Can you haul an old dock or deck?

We haul the boards and hardware once they are pulled. Tri-Dam reviews dock and deck work along the lake, so check with them before the work starts. Deck and dock lumber is often pressure-treated, which has its own California rules, so tell us before the job so we can price it honestly.

Can I burn my brush pile instead?

Only on a permissive burn day, with the right permits, and never while CAL FIRE has residential burning suspended for fire season. CAL FIRE also limits piles to 4 feet across. Call the burn day line at (209) 754-6600 first. If that is more hassle than it is worth, we haul the pile away.
